Continuing with the leadership project of the UIC nursing degree, the first year students have gone to “laGranja”, a school center for teaching emotions. The aim is for the student to experience a teaching program first-hand to help them reflect on their attitude from emotion and with the help of a natural environment, taking advantage of a format of experiential activities.
Students have been able to receive training through the following activities: Leadership with the horse: the animal can show us the type of leadership that the student exercises and can help them understand the meaning and mission of self-leadership, in addition to practicing mentoring and feeling in their own skin the benefits if guiding the team. The mission: an adventure circuit with different challenges to understand the skills necessary for teamwork: positive communication, active listening, coordination, and leadership. Guide and be guided: eliminating the sense of sight, the one who guides has to be able to lead his companion through an entire circuit full of obstacles. Patience, trust, active listening, empathy, and communication will be the main tools to reach the goal.
Using participatory teaching methodologies accompanied by reflection and direct feedback on what happened, students are helped to understand and deduce concepts and/or emotions from making sense of the lived experience. In this way, you can guide your behavior to new situations. Participation in this center is an authentic accelerator of experiences that fills the backpack of our students to continue working with them in the grade.
