The UIC welcomes first-year students, involving them in a journey for the development of nursing leadership. UIC Barcelona in its Nursing degree has been working, for 3 years now, to equip the new generations and make them leaders in their care. For this, the nursing degree has managed to unify all the skills of the degree into 4 Core competencies. Leadership is a systemic competence that needs others to be exercised in an effective way. These are: Emotional intelligence: students need support to learn to better regulate their emotions. Strategic thinking: students must learn to capture, evaluate, and discriminate ideas, to promote new points of view and propose solutions. Impact and influence: students must identify their ability to impact others, in addition to knowing their communication style, knowing how to transmit and listen. Teamwork: students must develop the ability to work together, planning, and involving the group in decision-making.
On the first day, students complete a test to find out their personality profile (DISC test), and carry out a series of workshops to break the ice and create a good atmosphere. This is just the beginning of a whole series of activities that await them throughout their four years.
The DISC tool allows students to get to know each other, allowing students to identify which behaviors predominate in them.
Based on the DISC tool, teams are created where the different personality profiles are represented, as happens in real life so that students can develop core competencies both in group tutorials and individual consultancies. In the same way, all the subjects of the degree have been transforming educational methodologies so that, from all angles, nursing studies transpire the essence of leadership.
